Seasonal resource oscillations maintain diversity in bacterial microcosms
Hypothesis: Seasonal variation in availability of resources maintains co-existence between different ecological types due to frequency-dependent interactions. Organism: Escherichia coli. Methods: When populations containing two ecotypes of E. coli that evolved from a common ancestor under sympatric conditions grow in batch culture on a mixture of glucose and acetate, they first use up the avail...
متن کاملphylogeography and genetic diversity of the lesser mouse- eared bat (myotis blythii) in iran
in current study, 63 samples of bat populations collected from differ regions were used for evaluating the geographic variations. twenty cranial and dental characters for traditional morphometric and landmarks method on the ventral, dorsal skull and mandible for geometry morphometric studies were used. statistical analyses of traditional morphometric and geometry morphometric data indicated low...
molecular and physiological characterizations of floral scent production in rosa damascena mill.
Unparallel diversification in bacterial microcosms.
Adaptive speciation has gained popularity as a fundamental process underlying the generation of diversity. We tested whether populations respond to similar forms of disruptive selection by diversifying in similar or parallel ways by investigating diversified populations of Escherichia coli B evolved in glucose and glucose-acetate environments. In both environments, the populations have differen...
متن کاملEstimation of bacterial hydrogen sulfide production in vitro
Oral bacterial hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production was estimated comparing two different colorimetric methods in microtiter plate format. High H2S production was seen for Fusobacterium spp., Treponema denticola, and Prevotella tannerae, associated with periodontal disease. The production differed between the methods indicating that H2S production may follow different pathways.
